Recently I shot the Post Apunkalyptic Style feature for the Fall 2016 Issue of Auxiliary Magazine and it was a fun feature to put together! One of my favorite models, Kayte Kz came in from New York City for it. I have been working with Kayte for years and it’s always a pleasure to build a working relationship with someone and work with them on many projects over time. You already know how each other work and if you’re a great fit, it can make the shoot feel effortless.
Fashion Editor Shannon Kramp styled this feature and we went with the theme Post Apunkalyptic. Post apocalyptic meets punk for a survivalist, tough look that is all about building your armor and getting by in this crazy world. There were lots of spikes, studs, leather, netting, and lacing. An almost all black palette makes for a very streamlined look.
Auxiliary’s new Beauty Editor Elizabeth Rhodes brought her makeup skills to this shoot. We brought in some bold markings and a bit of painting to build up the armor and personal uniform aspect of the styling. We also stuck to a black and white palette with some cool tones to continue the aim of a cohesive and streamlined look.
Emily Szarek covered hair and we kept it a bit messy to reflect the sense of survival and tough conditions. Kayte’s long hair brought a sense of power and the grey and black color paired well with our palette. We got a lot of range with hair in this feature and were able to show three looks that built off each other while presenting a few hair styling suggestions.
I really enjoyed the styling of this feature as I could see elements of it that are in my personal wardrobe. Post Apunkalyptic you are a good counter balance to romantic styles and you look good in all black!
The star of the show for Auxiliary’s Style feature is well, style! So my photography approach is to be clean and straightforward and let the clothes shine. My posing approach is to have the model channel the vibes of the styling and to go for poses that show off the fashion but feel authentic.
If you haven’t seen them, take a peek at past Style features I shot for Auxiliary Magazine. We’re already scheming this summer’s Style feature! So stay tuned and look for it in the Summer Issue of Auxiliary!
